O Temper Aluminum Circle for Deep Drawing Lamp Shades

In the modern lighting manufacturing industry, aluminum lamp shades have long superseded plastic and sheet iron, becoming the mainstream choice for residential, commercial, and industrial lighting thanks to their lightweight nature, high thermal conductivity, ease of finishing, and corrosion resistance. The market's exquisitely shaped, smooth-contoured, and defect-free deep-drawn or spun lamp shades are almost exclusively made from O-temper aluminum discs.

Many manufacturers have found that standard hard-temper or half-hard aluminum discs are ill-suited for deep drawing and spinning processes, frequently resulting in defects such as cracking, wrinkling, and uneven deformation. In contrast, O-temper aluminum discs—which have undergone soft annealing—are the preferred material for deep-drawn lamp shade production.

I. O-Temper Aluminum Discs

Today's mainstream lamp shades—including irregular, curved, and thin-walled deep-drawn designs—rely on two core forming processes: deep drawing and spinning. These processes require significant stretching, bending, and spinning of the aluminum disc to transform a flat blank into a deep, complexly curved, and uniform-walled shade body in a single operation. This demands exceptional material plasticity and stress stability—qualities that are the defining strengths of O-temper aluminum discs.

The aluminum disc for lighting fixtures is typically made from high-purity 1050 or 1070 aluminum alloys. These materials offer high purity, minimal impurities, and excellent forming characteristics. When combined with soft annealing, they perfectly meet the precision forming requirements of various lamp shade designs, making them an ideal base material for mass production.

II. Suitability for Deep Drawing

Deep drawing is a common method for the mass production of lamp shades. It utilizes stamping equipment to transform a flat aluminum disc into a cup-shaped or curved shade in a single deep-drawing operation, a process characterized by significant forming depth and a high ratio of tensile deformation. Hard-temper aluminum discs, characterized by high internal stress and poor ductility, are highly prone to issues such as edge cracking, sidewall wrinkling, and localized thinning or tearing during deep drawing. These problems not only result in low yield rates but also drive up costs associated with subsequent grinding and rework.

O-temper annealing—a softening treatment—effectively resolves these pain points. Annealed O-temper aluminum discs achieve an elongation rate exceeding 30% and possess exceptional plastic deformability; they can withstand the extreme stretching required in deep drawing processes, ensuring uniform material flow and smooth stress release.

In the deep drawing of lamp shades, O-temper aluminum discs enable single-stroke forming. The resulting shades feature smooth, flat sidewalls and uniform thickness, free from cracks, wrinkles, or edge collapse. They perfectly meet the production standards for thin-walled, deep-draw, and complex-curvature shades, significantly boosting mass production yields and effectively lowering manufacturing costs.

III. Suitability for Metal Spinning

Artistic lamp shades and commercial lighting reflectors—which often feature intricate designs and fluid curves—are typically manufactured using the metal spinning process. This technique relies on high-speed rotation and roller pressure to gradually shape the aluminum disc against a mandrel, placing stringent demands on the raw material's flexibility and deformation consistency.

The hard-temper aluminum discs are too rigid and lack sufficient toughness; during spinning, they are prone to springback, localized surface irregularities, and chaotic grain patterns, making it impossible to achieve a smooth, seamless curvature and complicating subsequent finishing processes. In contrast, O-temper aluminum discs—softened via annealing—offer excellent flexibility. They conform closely to the mandrel and deform uniformly during spinning, eliminating issues with stress-induced springback.

The finished lamp shades feature smooth, refined curves and precise lines, with surfaces free from spinning marks or irregularities. This not only enhances the overall quality and aesthetic appeal of the fixture but also ensures consistent shaping across production batches, fully meeting the rigorous appearance and precision standards required for high-end lighting products.
